Jake died on the A1 near Scotch Corner on January 6.
His mother Gillian was seriously injured but has recently been released from hospital to attend Jake’s funeral tomorrow.
It is thought they had been travelling home to Tyneside when their car skidded into the central reservation after 10pm.
They had made it to the roadside when a lorry skidded to miss their Peugeot 306 and hit them instead.
Jake, who was studying AS levels in applied business, media, communication and culture at sixth form at Newcastle College, died instantly.
Jake’s father Nick said: “The lads are a fantastic group of friends and they did a really nice tribute to my son.
“I was amazed at how many people he had befriended during his life and the amount of people who contacted us through Facebook.
“This support has been very important to us during this difficult time. It means a lot that Jake was so well-liked.
“Jake would have been disappointed that he missed today’s dancing as he lived to dance and loved everything about it.
Gillian and Nick are raising money in his name with the new Jake Gray Dance Charity.
The funeral service will take place at Saville Exchange, Howard Street, North Shields, with a private cremation at Tynemouth Crematorium.
