North football leagues take a battering from winter weather

“Usually we would play 12 to 13 games every Sunday.

“The longer this bad weather goes on the harder it will become to catch up on the games we have lost.”

Teams will now be forced to play their games during weekdays as well as at weekends.

However, players’ working patterns may leave some teams short.

Mark said: “It can be very difficult for some teams to put out their strongest sides when they rearrange fixtures for during the week.

“Many people work and it becomes difficult to tie these games in to suit everybody.”

The weather has also had an affect on teams’ fitness levels and the way in which they train prior to a game.

Alan Courtney, vice chairman of top-of-the-league side Spennymoor Town FC said the weather has also affected players’ health.

He said: “If players are not playing on a regular basis they become out of practice and it has an effect on their game.

“Players do train throughout the week but its not the same as playing an 11-a-side game.

“Training inside is no substitute to playing the real thing.

“We have been one of the lucky teams to keep up our form and now we are nine points clear at the top.”
