Now Home Secretary Alan Johnson has revealed two new prototype glasses which are unbreakable but are also made from glass.
Glass attacks cost the NHS £2.7bn each year.
The Glass Plus design has a thin layer of resin on the inside, while the Twin Wall model has two layers of glass bound together by resin.
Mr Johnson said: “All being well, we’ll find either one of these two projects, or even both of them, to be the kind of glasses you’ll get in pubs and clubs not just in this country but around the world.
“Having that weapon in your hand is an enormous part of why these injuries take place in the first instance.
“It’s about bringing together all the talents of design and technology and innovation to find a solution.”
Tests have shown that not only are the glasses safer but the double layer keeps drinks cooler for longer.
A spokesman for the British Beer and Pub Association said: “We think drinkers would prefer these to polycarbonate but testing still needs to take place.”
