ODDS-on for love Graham Porter popped the big question by sponsoring a race at the dogs.
His stunned girlfriend knew a rabbit was off when she checked the 9pm race card and saw: “Karen Worker will you Marry Me? Love Gray.”
After a quick pause she said “yes” to her man.
The couple had been enjoying a Valentine’s night out at Newcastle’s greyhound stadium where Graham had already set up the proposal.
Determined to make it a special night, kitchen porter Graham had whisked Karen away from their Scarborough home, even arranging a stretch-limousine to collect them from their hotel.
Karen told the Sunday Sun that while the dogs might not be everybody’s idea of romance, the proposal was perfect.
The teacher, 34, said: “I think I’m still in shock. I was really surprised, but it was such a lovely way to do it.
It’s certainly something we’ll never forget for the rest of our lives.
“I actually didn’t notice at first because I was trying to pick a runner. I couldn’t work out why Graham was just staring at me.
“Then I saw who had sponsored the race and Graham got out a ring.
“I didn’t have to think about it. I’d already told myself I’d say yes if he ever asked me.
“He’s such a practical joker I did make him wait a minute first though . . . just to get my own back.”
