A Great North Air Ambulance helicopter and emergency response car rushed medics to the scene.
A spokeswoman for the charity said: “We were called to get a doctor to the scene of the accident.
“ At the time the extent of the patient’s injuries were not known.
“The patient was conscious when our team arrived and showed incredible bravery during his ordeal.
“Having a doctor at the scene meant we were able to give appropriate treatment and begin assessing his condition immediately.
“Instead of taking him to a nearby hospital to be stabilised we were able to dramatically cut the time before he was given over to the care of burns specialists in Newcastle.
“Our team did everything possible to give him the best possible chance of a quick and full recovery.
“Our thoughts and best wishes are with him and his family at this extremely difficult time for them.”
Fire watch manager Madison, who oversaw the rescue, said: “There were initial concerns over the toxicity of the substance, which had caught fire, because it was unknown to us.
“A chemicals expert who was working at the site at the time was able to advise us on the subject.
“The company are co-operating fully with officers investigating the origins of the fire.”
