North York Moors flood victim named as Vanessa Robson

A Landrover Freelander wedged under the bridge at Low Muffels, North York Moors, where Vanessa Robson died

POLICE last night named a woman who died after her car was dragged into torrential flood waters.

Vanessa Robson, 53, was found dead after her Land Rover became submerged in the beck at Muffles Bridge, at Hartoft, Pickering, on the North York Moors.

An RAF helicopter, police and the fire brigade scoured the area for the driver after the 4x4 was found wedged under the bridge shortly after midday on Friday. A few hours later, Mrs Robson, of Beverley, Yorkshire, was found at 4.20pm yesterday.

A police spokesperson said: “Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death to establish how this tragic accident happened.”

The alarm was raised at about 12.20pm when a passer-by saw the empty vehicle on its side in the water.

Emergency services and specialist rescue teams spent four hours searching the scene as the river began to subside.

The Land Rover was swept about 200 yards downstream before becoming wedged under a bridge.
