A diving team from West Yorkshire Police and a helicopter from RAF Leconfield were scrambled, as firefighters from Kirkbymoorside, Pickering, Whitby and Richmond scoured the river bank.
Rick Bragg, winch operator on the helicopter from RAF Leconfield, said: “The water was flowing very, very fast.
“It is difficult, as a driver, to know what to do in that situation - whether it would be safer to stay with the vehicle or try to get out.”
Other parts of the UK were bracing themselves for flooding after forecasters said heavy rain would intensify today.
The Environment Agency had four flood warnings in force, on the River Went, in South Yorkshire, the upper River Hull in East Yorkshire, part of the River Ouse, in North Yorkshire, and Lustrum Beck, in County Durham.
There were widespread reports of flash flooding in the Yorkshire region too, with many roads in and around Scarborough badly flooded.
Other incidents were reported in York, Selby and Malton.
But yesterday North Yorkshire Fire Service said flooding calls had subsided overnight.
