Widow 'pleasantly surprised' by £1m railway posters

POSTERS from the golden age of rail could fetch more than £1m for the family of a train enthusiast from the North.

Malcolm Guest, of Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, rescued thousands of promotional posters, signs and other memorabilia that were destined for the rubbish tip when the old regional train companies were nationalised.

A former BR employee, his terraced house was “filled to the gunnels” with his collection, a hobby he continued until his death, aged 66, last year.

His collection stunned auctioneers by its scale, with more than 2,500 rare posters alone advertising railway trips to Northumberland, Durham and his beloved Yorkshire Dales.

The posters are believed to be worth £600,000 and will be eagerly sought when they go under the hammer at Morphets Auctioneers, Harrogate, North Yorkshire.
