War hero reveals new fight

John agreed he still has a very positive attitude both to life and to his illness.

He added: “When you’ve got dementia you just have to carry on as you would normally for as long as you can, that’s the thing.

“Although I have this disease Wynn and I are still enjoying ourselves and we have happy, productive and useful lives.”

The Department of Health’s ‘Living Well with Dementia’ campaign has just started in the UK, with a series of informative adverts on TV, radio, online and in print.

In the North East dementia currently affects 29,686 people who want, need and deserve support, friendship and practical help from family, from friends and neighbours.

Debbie Smith, Older Adults Lead for the North East said: “Dementia is such an important issue for our community and this campaign will encourage us to engage more with people living with dementia and help them to live a fuller life.”

Caroline Burden, Alzheimer’s Society Area Manager for the North East, said: “People with dementia tell us that, once diagnosed, others begin to act differently or avoid them. We know that with support people can enjoy a good quality of life.”
