Newcastle dress designer set to swap teams

Angy Morton with dresses made from football strips

SHE hit the headlines when she ripped her Newcastle shirt and transformed into a symbolic wedding dress.

And now football-crazy fashion designer Angy Morton could soon be siding with the opposition over on Wearside.

That’s because Angy could soon be selling some of her chic designs for female fans in the official Sunderland AFC club shop.

She said: “It’s not confirmed yet, but they have expressed an interest in my work – I know the club has always been a rival to my favourite club Newcastle but business is business. Nothing personal.”

It was back in 2008 that the creative seamstress, who originally comes from Romania, protested at NUFC’s management crisis by tearing up the kit and turning it into a jaw-dropping dress, with “King Kev” emblazoned across the back.

And in a further artistic demonstration, Angy, of Cumbria, hit out at the vast numbers of home and away strips clubs churn out each year, by taking strips from 11 other teams – including Toon rivals Sunderland – have been ripped up and turned into stunning evening wear.

That collection – called Stolen Dreams – has attracted lots of attention and will be shown at London Fashion Week this week, when Angy takes part in a show called Fashion Mavericks.

The 36-year-old’s designs have also scored a hit with several clubs, two of which have expressed an interest in selling customised suit jackets – with sections featuring key parts of the club strips – and tops in their club shops.

She is meeting execs from West Ham next week and will be showing Sunderland some plans soon after.
