CHRISTMAS Day brought some very special presents for families across the North.
Just hours after the clock struck midnight yesterday morning, maternity wards were filled with the cries of new-born babies.
In Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary, the region’s largest maternity centre, seven babies were born in the early hours.
As many as eight mums-to-be were still expected to deliver throughout the day in what midwives said was a bumper year.
The first baby, Ethan Joe Dorritt, arrived at 1.07am, weighing 6lb 6oz.
Proud parents Paula Binney, 31, and Stephen Dorritt, 37, a printer, of Consett, County Durham, were delighted their new son arrived on the big day.
Ethan, a little brother to Luke, four, was two weeks early as he was due on January 9.
Paula, who works for Metro Radio, said: “I didn’t expect to have Ethan on Christmas Day, but it was a lovely surprise and we’re all absolutely delighted about it.
“Christmas is always a lovely time of year, but the birth of our new son has made it extra special. Luke is also very excited to have a baby brother.”
