FORMER Toon chairman Sir John Hall may have been shocked by the £35m bid for star striker Andy Carroll, but he is confident Mike Ashley will now splash that cash.
“It was quite a shock when it was announced Liverpool had offered all that money for him,” said the man who kick-started the “Entertainers” revolution at St James’ Park.
“It was a big decision for Mike Ashley to sell one of the best players, or one of the players with the most potential.
“Now Ashley will have to buy in and rebuild the team.
“I’m sure he will do that.”
Gateshead-born Carroll became the most expensive English footballer when the Anfield club swooped on transfer deadline day to replace Fernando Torres.
And Sir John thinks the 22-year-old can live up to that tag.
“If he keeps his feet on the ground, he could go on to be one of the best centre forwards that Liverpool and England have had,” he said.
“I think he will do very, very well. He’s a typical Geordie centre-forward.”
Carroll trained with his new team-mates for the first time this week as he battled back from injury.
Now, Sir John expects him to knuckle down and bang in the goals for Kenny Dalglish’s team.
