FIREFIGHTERS have been battling their second major blaze in two days.
Fire crews were called to the Alex Smiles waste recycling plant, in Deptford, Sunderland, following reports of a fire at around 8.50pm on Friday night.
Thick smoke plumes from the plant could be seen for miles and many onlookers parked their cars along Keir Hardy Way, near the Stadium of Light, to watch the blaze from the opposite side of the river.
Despite the distance, those watching the firefighters tackle the blaze could still feel the heat wafting across the water.
The fire took hold in a yard alongside the Liebherr crane-building factory and some 20 firefighters and an aerial platform was used to bring it under control.
Fire crew members were still dampening down the blaze yesterday morning.
