TRIBUTES have been paid to an elderly man who died in a house fire.
Firefighters with three appliances pulled the man from the house in Pennine Crescent, Redcar, in the early hours of yesterday morning.
He has not yet been formally identified but was named locally as Terry McGlade, who was in his seventies and lived by himself.
Neighbours were woken by the sound of fire crews tackling the blaze, and it emerged that the alarm may have been raised by a passer-by who spotted the fire.
Keith White, 36, who lives across the road from the fire ravaged home, said: “We got woken up by a lad banging on the man’s windows saying the house is on fire.
“He was really smashing against the windows. He must have rang the fire engine.
“He must have been cycling by and noticed it. We saw smoke coming out of the tiles and the back windows.”
Last night, as an investigation by the police and fire services got under way, neighbours paid tribute to the victim.
