Buffs Social Club, Stockton in female drinkers row

Margaret Casling of Norton is accusing a Teesside CIU Club, the Buffs Social Club in Stockton, of breaking EU equality law

A THIRD North working men’s club has come under fire for its policies towards women.

The Buffs Social Club in Stockton has been accused of treating women differently from men when they visit from other CIU (Club and Institute Union) affiliated bars.

Margaret Casling, 62, from Norton, Teesside, told the Sunday Sun that she is forced to pay a 50 pence entrance fee each time she visits – while men are allowed to sign in.

As a full member of Norton Working Men’s Club, the CIU have confirmed Margaret should be able to sign in when visiting other affiliated clubs.

Last month the Sunday Sun told how women at Mill View Social Club in Sunderland had been “booed” and “jeered at” for entering the club. The club secretary said it was “tradition” that the club had a “men only bar”.

And we also reported how 38-year-old Dawn Lythgoe, from Norton, had been refused entry to Hardwick Social Club in Stockton, Teesside, because she was a woman.

Mum-of-four Margaret said the Buffs club is “stuck in the past”.
