Leave the kids alone, Ken

I AM writing to complain about an article in the Ken Oxley column on August 3.

The article was about David Miliband and although I didn’t agree with Mr Oxley’s views it was fair comment until the third last paragraph. It contained the line ‘swear on his adopted kids’ lives’.

Leaving aside the bizarre notion of anyone swearing on their children’s lives in this day and age, why did he have to mention their adoptive status? Do you know of anyone who says here are my adopted children Janet and John?

Of course not. They are their children, full stop.

Mr Miliband does not subject his children to photo opportunities, unlike some politicians, so I don’t know why Ken Oxley found it necessary to drag them into the article or refer to the fact they were adopted.

I think the Miliband family deserve an apology. I read the Sunday Sun as I don’t like tabloid journalism. Ken Oxley’s remarks are offensive and worthy of the gutter Press which I seek to avoid — DOREEN PURVIS, South Shields, South Tyneside.

Ken says: You make a fair point, but if Miliband winds up at Number 10, I’ll be surprised if his kids aren’t rolled out for a “happy families” photo opportunity.

I’m sorry that you found the article worthy of the gutter Press . . . I was actually trying to make a point about gutter politics!
