Adoption label can leave scars

I READ the letter about David Miliband saying his children were adopted.

The letter said: “Who would say ‘here are my adopted children’?”.

I was adopted by my aunt and uncle. I was always introduced as “my adopted daughter” by my mother. To everyone else I was sister, daughter (my dad), niece, cousin . . . never was being adopted mentioned. I was 40 years old before I told my mother I was sick of being told I was adopted. I said “why don’t you put it on the TV and in the papers, and tell the world?”. Everyone else knew.

I was and still am bitter about it. My mother died 16 years ago. I lost dad 36 years ago — Mrs M Crosbie, Acklam, Middlesbrough
