I AM calling on your readers to help a most worthy cause and to donate their unwanted or broken jewellery to Diabetes UK, a leading health charity.
If anyone has, let’s say, an odd earring or a watch that doesn’t tick, I urge them to send it to Diabetes UK, who will convert such old jewellery into crucial funds to support diabetes research projects.
Diabetes is a serious condition which affects more people every day. There are 2.5 million people in the UK with diabetes, and more than half a million who have the condition without knowing it. By 2025, this number will rise to a colossal four million, and so it is vital that we do all we can to raise awareness of diabetes and to help find a cure.
It is Diabetes UK’s 75th anniversary in 2009, and the charity is aiming to raise £75,000 from the Old Jewellery Appeal to mark this occasion.
Please send any unwanted jewellery to Old Jewellery Appeal, Diabetes UK, FREEPOST LON12854, London, NW1 2YF. Thank you in advance for your help — COLIN DEXTER, author of Inspector Morse.
