A time for children? Not always

ALTHOUGH the recession is biting hard and having an impact upon our Christmas plans, most of us will still be looking forward to spending time with loved ones, unwrapping presents and having fun.

However, studies suggest that up to one in 10 children in the UK experiences neglect. That’s approximately 1.5 million kids for whom Christmas is not a time of love and laughter, but one of loneliness, isolation and sadness.

So it’s clear that even though it sometimes goes unnoticed, neglect is a very real problem in this country and one that is getting worse.

As a mother myself, I found it shocking to learn that more than one in 10 professionals (14%) working with children in the North East have seen a rise in suspected child neglect in the past 12 months.

That’s why I’m supporting Action for Children’s neglect appeal.

They work with neglected children every day to give them practical help, love and understanding for as long as it takes to transform their lives.

And their services in the North East – which include children’s centres and Newcastle Family Support – work closely with families to help them get through tough times and stay together.

Action for Children wants to raise £750,000 by the end of this year to reach out to neglected children and their families, all of whom desperately need help.

Any donation, no matter how big or small, will help.

So as we look forward to enjoying ourselves this Christmas, we should all spare a thought for those who have little to celebrate.

Not now, nor at any other time of the year. It’s simple. Just call 0300 123 2112 or visit www.actionforchildren.org. uk. And take your action for children now
