Cricket kids kings of the castle

MORE than 100 boys and girls took part in an under-11 cricket competition against the towering backdrop of Bamburgh Castle.

Hosted by Bamburgh Cricket Club, the event attracted clubs from all across Northumberland – each player eager to become the next Ian Botham or Paul Collingwood.

The tournament sought to build on the enthusiasm for cricket in the county, significantly boosted by Northumberland’s successes when set 350, 400 and 450 runs to win in the second innings of their last three games in defeating Norfolk, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire.

Durham’s Friends Provident Trophy success at Lord’s only acted as another feather in the cap for North Country cricket.

The Bamburgh event was described as “an unqualified success” by Ian Wardle, Development Manager for Northumberland Cricket Board who, in partnership with Northumberland Sport and Alnwick Leisure organised the event.

He said: “Bamburgh put on a super day and even the weather smiled on us!”
