HE may be a target for the dressing-room comedians, but Mark Stoneman is quite happy for people to call him Michael Di Venuto’s clone as he looks to learn from Durham’s most experienced batsman.
Di Venuto remains the prize wicket in Durham’s top order and Stoneman has undoubtedly benefited from playing alongside the Australian, even if it means there are a few jokes at his expense.
According to head coach Geoff Cook, Stoneman is not only the most naturally talented opener to have graduated from the club’s famed Academy, he is starting to look like Di Venuto when he bats.
Stoneman, who has scored two half centuries in as many Championship games on his return to the side, said: “It has been something which has been running for a while now.
“I have picked up little traits which have crept into my game.
“I have not been aware I am doing it, but it has been happening subconsciously and the boys have taken the mick a bit.
“He is not a bad role model to have though is he?
“He has been a very successful cricketer and his record speaks for itself really.
“Everywhere you go, everywhere we play he is the man the opposition want to get out early.
“He is someone to model myself on and hopefully I can emulate him and, eventually, get some statistics like him.”
Cook is happy to see the 23-year-old spend as much time as possible with the former Australian international.
He said: “They are quite close and get on very well, which the other players like to point out.
“However, he is learning from an excellent player and if he turns into another Di Venuto we will be absolutely delighted, for sure.”
Stoneman has had to bide his time this year.
