Tony Mowbray admits he may have to sell

TONY Mowbray admits struggling Boro may have to sell in the January transfer window.

Tony Mowbray

Mowbray talked of promotion, the Premier League and getting Boro into Europe at his coronation on Monday, but he knows all about the problems the club is facing if they don’t turn things around.

With many of their players on big wages by Championship standards, Boro need to go up to keep balancing the books. There has been speculation of a fire sale in the summer, when parachute payments are set to dry up.

And while the Boro board insists they will back Mowbray to the hilt, he has taken on the job with his eyes wide open.

“The finances of the club probably dictate there is going to be some movement,” he admitted to the Sunday Sun.

“The bottom line is this club was in the Premier League for 11 years on the bounce and the side were on Premier League salaries.

“A club like West Brom, who I obviously know very well, were in the Championship with players on a certain salary. Then they go into the Premier League and get another salary.

“They get relegated and they go back to the salary they were on, so they never really find themselves in trouble.

“But if you’ve been in the Premier League for 11 years and you come down on Premier League salaries, it becomes a problem because your cash flow doesn’t marry up.”
