Boro eye Belgian youngster

Axel Witsel

MIDDLESBROUGH are eyeing Belgian midfielder Axel Witsel — as Gareth Southgate maintains his commitment to attacking football.

While the Teessiders face stiff competition for £8 million-rated Standard Liege playmaker Steven Defour, club-mate Witsel could cost less than half the price.

Arsenal and Palermo are hot on Defour’s trail, but Boro scouts also noted 19-year-old Witsel’s performances in Liege’s recent two-legged UEFA Cup victory over Everton.

Southgate wants his side to continue playing an expansive, entertaining game, insisting: “It’s all about making sure we keep faith with what we’re doing.”
