Blackburn Rover 0, Boro 4

BORO were on a crest of a wave after getting a 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford the previous week.

And thanks to Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, this trip to Ewood was a stroll in the park as Middlesbrough took apart Rovers with a clinical second half display.

Their cause was aided by the dismissal of Blackburn’s Tugay for a second yellow after just 30 minutes. He was first booked for deliberate handball and followed that up with a rash challenge on Mendieta.

After a goalless first half, the game sprung into life as the Dutchman bagged a second-half hat-trick to seal an impressive win for the Teessiders who never looked in any danger of losing this one once Hasselbaink lashed home from eight yards on 46 minutes.

George Boateng got in on the act with his first for the club as Steve McClaren’s Boro climbed up to fifth in the table, ahead of Manchester United and Liverpool after nine games.
