November 23 - Scores his 100th Premiership goal for Newcastle in 5-3 defeat at Manchester United, becoming the first man to accomplish the feat with two clubs.

December 26 - Scores the 350th goal of his career.

February 26 - Nets his first Champions League goal from open play against Bayer Leverkusen, goes on to complete hat-trick by half-time.

March 15 - Scores his 144th Newcastle goal in his 200th league appearance for

them, a penalty in a 2-0 win at Charlton which takes him third in the all-time list of Magpies goalscorers.

October 4 - Scores his 250th career goal in Newcastle’s Premiership match against Southampton.

2004: August - Announces he will retire at the end of the season.

2005: February 2 - Scores 250th Premiership goal in Newcastle’s 1-1 draw at Manchester City.

2006: April 1 - Announces he will play on as player-coach for the 2006 season.

January 7 - Scores his 200th goal for Newcastle against Mansfield in the FA Cup third round, equalling the club record of Jackie Milburn.

February 2 - Newcastle announce Shearer will assist caretaker boss Glenn Roeder following Graeme Souness’ dismissal.

February 4 - Scores 201st goal for Newcastle at home to Portsmouth to become top scorer in the club’s history.

April 21 - Admits his career has been ended by a medial ligament injury sustained at the Stadium of Light.

July 30 - Announces he has turned down a role in then England boss Steve McClaren’s backroom team having already agreed a contract extension with the BBC as a pundit.

2008: Interim Newcastle manager Joe Kinnear announces Shearer has turned down the chance to join the coaching staff at St James's Park.

2009: March 31 - It is announced he will take over as manager of Newcastle until the end of the season with the Magpies third from bottom of the Premier League.
