And it is doubtful that Shearer would regard that as anything like enough to do the drastic rebuilding job he would have to undertake at St James’s Park.

That means Ashley is stepping up his search for new investment, while considering selling Wise-sanctioned big-money buys Fabricio Coloccini, Xisco and even Jonas Gutierrez.

The Sunday Sun understands United’s current scouting team have remained on the trail of Sheffield United defender Kyle Naughton and Derby playmaker Kris Commons since January.

But it remains to be seen whether either player would be on Shearer’s hitlist.

Coloccini, an £11 million signing from Deportivo La Coruna, will head the exodus of Wise’s flops, following the former director of football’s own departure from St James’s Park.

And United are set to draw a line under the Wise era by also parting company with chief scout Lil Fuccillo and technical co-ordinator – and supposed transfer guru – Jeff Vetere.
