STEVEN TAYLOR has urged Newcastle to give Chris Hughton the United manager’s job permanently.
And Hughton himself has reaffirmed his desire for his caretaker role to be made full-time.
Homegrown defender Taylor, having given up hope on Alan Shearer returning to St James’s Park as the Magpies’ ownership saga drags on, wants Hughton to stay in the hotseat.
"Would I be happy to see Chris Hughton get the job permanently? Yes, he’s done brilliantly," said Taylor, with the Magpies preparing to defend their unbeaten, table-topping start to the Championship season at Cardiff today.
"He’s definitely strong enough to do it and he’s got the best out of the players here.
"He deserves his Manager of the Month Award. We all respect him. A lot of the players would love him to get the job."
Having initially maintained he had no interest in the position, Hughton himself is now going all out to persuade Ashley – or any future owner – that he is the man to lead Newcastle’s promotion charge.
"Would I like the job? Absolutely," said Hughton.
"I’ve relished working with this group of players and would love that to continue."
