Hughton defends tactics after stalemate

“He certainly got better as the game went on, and he is a young lad who will get even better with experience,” said Hughton.

“He’s not had much training with us and was thrown in at the deep end and did very well.”

Meanwhile with top target Moses looking set to join Wigan, Hughton refused to close the door on a new forward arriving at St James’ Park.

“Attack-wise, we have options already,” said Hughton. “But the decision we have is still whether to bring in that extra player.”

Leicester boss Nigel Pearson was frustrated his side failed to overcome Newcastle.

He said: “I thought we were the better side with 11, and the better side with 10.

“It was important for us to put in a performance in which we believed in ourselves and also showed some quality.

“But it is only one performance and one point. We still have aspirations to be involved in the play-offs. We have been in a bit of a rut recently so today was an important stepping stone for us.”

However, Pearson refused to comment on Wellens’ dismissal or on claims that City should have had two penalties during the match.

Pearson said: “I’ve not reviewed the incidents but I will be having my say on them later on.”
