Newcastle Brown deal not dead

NEWCASTLE were last night given fresh hope in their bid to land Manchester United defender Wes Brown – by Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

Ferguson has rebuffed an initial Magpies’ bid for his England international, but has hinted a deal could yet be struck if Brown is keen.

With Brown having rejected the offer of a new deal at Old Trafford and free to leave for nothing in the summer, Ferguson may be playing brinkmanship with the 28-year-old.

“There was an enquiry from Newcastle about Wes and we turned it down,” said Ferguson last night.

“The matter rests with Wes and his agent. We’ll just wait and see what happens. Our offer is still there – it’s now up to Wes.”
