Toon’s Luq holds over £1.6m bill

NEWCASTLE have escaped a £1.6 million bill – after a Spanish judge ordered Deportivo La Coruna to pay the money to Albert Luque.

The former Toon flop – now not getting a game at Ajax – took Deportivo to court insisting they owed him 15 per cent of the £10 million fee that took him to United three years ago.

However, Deportivo’s lawyers claimed the money was contractually due to be paid by Newcastle.

But Manuel Carballo Garcia, a judge presiding in La Coruna’s social court, found in Luque’s favour, and decreed that Deportivo – and NOT Newcastle – were the club obliged to cough up.

“It is not possible to extend obligations to those whom Spanish law cannot affect,” Garcia said.
