Keegan fears Owen will leave

Michael Owen

KEVIN KEEGAN fears Michael Owen may snub a new contract at Newcastle and leave the club as a free agent next summer.

Having previously said he was “certain” Owen (left) would sign a new deal this summer, Keegan has now sounded a note of caution over his future.

“Michael’s got a big choice. He has every right to be free at the end of next season and go anywhere he wants at 29 years of age,” said the United boss.

“That’s why I said eight weeks ago we should tie him up. If we don’t, and we lose him, then what can I say?

“It shouldn’t happen and it probably won’t happen. But it could.”

Meanwhile, Newcastle are back on the trail of Porto centre- half Bruno Alves (right), who they tracked during Sam Allardyce’s spell as manager.
