BOSS Neil McDonald handed a first-team debut to Blackburn youngster Joe Garner . . . but Crewe put another dent in United’s promotion push.

From a debatable free kick, Crewe took the lead when Julien Baudet powered home a diving header from eight yards out.

Paul Thirlwell’s shot was deflected inches wide as United desperately searched for an equaliser.

But Nicky Maynard had the last laugh as he caught the home side on the break, skipping past one challenge and slotting home late in the game.
