Penney unfazed by the Shrimps

DARLINGTON entertain Morecambe tomorrow, and the Shrimps’ chances of reaching the play-offs have been given a boost.

The 10-point deduction for Rotherham, who went into administration last week, means that Morecambe have one fewer sides in their way as they bid for a play-off place in their first season in the Football League.

But Darlington manager Dave Penney is unfazed, explaining: “Morecambe had a chance even before Rotherham’s problems emerged, so I don’t think it has any bearing on Monday’s game.

“Rotherham’s deduction leaves us even further clear of eight place, and gives other clubs a chance of making the play-offs, but it’s what we do that counts.”

Quakers last home game, against Grimsby was a thriller, as Penney’s men came from two goals down to win, and that, coupled with the Bank Holiday, may attract a bigger crowd to the Arena as the promotion race intensifies.

“I want us to pick up where we left off against Grimsby,” said Penney.

Meanwhile, defender Tim Ryan has a chance of playing again before the end of the season, despite long term knee injury worries.

The left-back is training with the club’s physiotherapist, and will return to training with the squad soon. He may even play a part for the reserves this week.

“We want him back, because he has vast experience and with another seven games after tomorrow, he can play a part,” said Penney.

The left side of the team has been a problem all season, and while Ben Parker has come in on loan from Leeds and impressed at left-back, Penney would love the option of having experienced duo Tim Ryan and Richie Foran on the pitch together.

Left winger Foran is building up his match fitness after hamstring trouble.
