Berwick Rangers 2 Annan Athletic 1

A LATE penalty save by Mark Pate earned Berwick victory over Annan at Shielfield Park.

David Cox could only hold his head in horror as the keeper got down at the post to stop the spot-kick.

Rangers are proving a hoodoo team for Annan, who failed to beat the Borderers in four meetings last term.

Rangers got off to a dream start with new signing Paul Currie from Musselburgh finding the back of the net to round-off a super four-man move after only three minutes.

Ian Little could have doubled the tally minutes later, but he failed to connect with a cross from Elliott Smith.

Annan hit back and Bryan Gilfillan levelled in the 19th minute with a low 20-yard shot.

Just before the break, only a fine diving save by Craig Summersgill denied David Greenhall.

Minutes earlier Greenhall had come to Rangers’ rescue as John MacBeth waltzed round four opponents.

Lewis Sloan almost gave the visitors an advantage after the break before Summersgill fisted away from Graham Guy.
