Carlisle 1 Brentford 3

LAST season’s League Two champions Brentford left Brunton Park yesterday with their first three points of the League One season as they capitalised on some worrying defensive errors by Carlisle.

Cleveland Taylor had the first chance of the game with just two minutes on the clock when he cushioned a Matt Robson cross towards the far post.

Keeper Lewis Price was beaten, but the ball dropped just the wrong side of the upright as far as Carlisle were concerned.

The Bees stung the home side in the 12th minute when Myles Weston stole a yard at a Saunders corner and powered his free header into the roof of the net.

But the Cumbrians were quickly back on level terms when Kevin O’Connor was judged to have handled a Kavanagh cross.

Set-piece specialist Ian Harte took control of the spot-kick and made no mistake with a crisply struck effort.

Anyinsah and Robson had shots blocked as Carlisle pressed forward, but Sam Wood should have scored for the visitors when he was sent clear by Saunders.

He chose to shoot early from 16-yards, but he couldn’t keep it on target and he scuffed it wide of the post.

Harte went within a whisker of grabbing his second of the day when he met a Kavanagh cross on the volley from 10-yards, but it rose sharply and flew just over the bar.
