Carlisle 1 Brentford 3

The woodwork was struck again on the stroke of half-time when Keogh nodded a Kavanagh corner back into the box.

Anyinsah challenged for it and the ball bounced up and over the keeper before rebounding away off the crossbar.

The Bees gave themselves the perfect start to the second period when Weston spun and shot from just inside the area.

It flew through Pidgeley’s hands and legs as he tried to gather low and he was left to beat the floor in frustration as the recriminations started.

Substitute Scott Dobie had a shot cleared off the line, but the Cumbrians were the architects of their own downfall in the 64th minute when a Pidgeley throw-out forced Harte into a rushed pass.

Sam Wood nicked in to claim it and wrong-footed the United stopper with a deflected shot that eventually went in via the post.

Pidgeley then had to block Saunders when he went one-on-one from a lightning-quick break as Brentford started to look comfortable with their two-goal cushion.

Carlisle manager, Greg Abbott, said: “We are very disappointed with all of the goals we conceded, because we have defended poorly with all of them.

“There was some poor decision making and players weren’t strong enough or bright enough in certain situations, and we have paid a harsh price for that.”

Abbott added: “We have to make teams work much harder than this.

“Brentford haven’t had to do much at all, but we’ve given them three goals and three points.

“That isn’t acceptable and it’s something that we will have to put right quickly.”
