Bogie replaced striker Armand One and injured full-back Craig Baxter at half-time and the Tynesiders were back on terms on the hour.

Substitute Wayne Phillips’ cross was headed clear to Gate, who smashed a sensational 22-yard volley into the top corner.

Gateshead now looked the likelier side, with Michael Mackay flashing a shot wide and sub Jamie Harwood off target with a header from a Neale McDermott free kick.

But Gateshead’s defensive frailties resurfaced as a poor McDermott header saw Barnes out-muscle Swailes to pinch the winner.
