Josh Scott picked the ball up on the right and ran unchallenged to the edge of the box before beating Hoult with a good shot straight into the bottom corner.
Noel Whelan’s Football League comeback was ended by injury after just 34 minutes when the former Middlesbrough player damaged his hamstring.
His departure from the field saw any Quakers’ hopes of salvaging a point disappear.
The only surprise was that Dagenham didn’t add to their tally. Hoult made up for his error by pulling off several good saves.
Scott charged through but Hoult pushed his shot over the bar, and in the second half the keeper bravely came off his line to save at the feet of Scott Griffiths, who had raced through the Darlington defence.
Hoult also denied Peter Gain on two occasions and then later denied Paul Benson.
The game was so one-sided the Quakers only created one real chance – a cross from the right by Paul Arnison that youngster Dan Groves headed just wide.
