CARLISLE United stretched their unbeaten run to five games with a solid display against struggling Wycombe – and their second consecutive clean sheet made the display even more satisfying for a very content Cumbrians’ manager.
Greg Abbott said: “I think the most satisfying thing at the moment is that we’re not conceding goals.
“There is plenty for us to be happy about, but that’s the biggest thing at the moment. We have shown again today that we will always create chances, and we’re giving ourselves the opportunity to pick points up with the work that we’re doing defensively.”
The Cumbrians set the early pace and Vincent Pericard should have given his side the lead when he raced onto a ball over the top. He took two touches to get to the edge of the area but Scott Shearer was equal to the shot when it came.
Matt Robson headed over from eight yards after a curling Kevan Hurst cross moments later, and the pair swapped places for the next attack as Carlisle drove forward. Robson provided the delivery but Hurst somehow spooned his close-range volley over the bar when it looked easier to score.
It was smooth football from United and Pericard played Robson through with an incisive pass that left the back line flat footed. The nippy winger went for the far post and was disappointed to see it ricochet away off the base of the upright.
The Chairboys reminded Carlisle that they couldn’t afford to sit back when Matt Harrold stole a yard as Horwood sliced a low cross. The striker got there first and put his header just over the bar.
