Carlisle United 6 Tipton Town 0

Carlisle's Gary Madine celebrates his hat trick with team mate Peter Murphy

SOME 132 places separated Tipton Town and Carlisle United as the magic of the FA Cup brought David and Goliath together at Brunton Park.

But the fairytale, first-ever, first round appearance quickly became a nightmare for the lowly visitors as Greg Abbott’s men showed their ruthless side.

“This competition brings a shock in every round and we did not want it to be us today,” the Carlisle manager said.

“We got the early goal that we wanted and we pushed on from there. The pleasing thing is that we created chances and we took the wind out of their sails before they could even think about taking the game to us.

“I’m particularly pleased for the strikers because they have done their job and got their goals, and that’s important for us all.

“The criticism from today is that we didn’t carry it on in the second half until much later in the game, but it was still a good job done.”

The expected early pressure came from the Football League with Gary Madine seeing plenty of the ball in and around the box.

And it was his flick that released Francois Zoko on six minutes as keeper Matt Sargeant found himself in no man’s land. A very neat lob left the stranded keeper with no chance.

The lead was doubled with the next attack of the game when Ben Marshall raced down the right flank and cut the ball across the face of goal. Gary Madine made no mistake as he shook off his marker and drilled the ball into the roof of the net.
