NEWTON Aycliffe yesterday celebrated promotion when they hit Seaham Red Star for six.

Prolific scorer Warren Byrne gave Aycliffe a dream start with his 10th-minute strike.

Early in the second period the lowly Reds shocked their illustrious opponents as Mark Ewart equalised, but this was to be their only success.

From then on, the goals flowed for Aycliffe. Byrne took his individual tally to four with Elliott Gardiner and James Oliver also on target.

Aycliffe now have 104 goals from 34 matches.

Guisborough Town enhanced their chances of claiming one of the other two promotion places at home to Whitehaven.

Austin Johnson bagged a brace of goals with David Onions, Shane Henry and Michael Roberts also finding the net in a 5-2 victory.

The top-five clash between Marske United and North Shields ended in a draw.

Stephen Cochrane converted a 65th-minute penalty for the Seasiders, but with six minutes remaining Keith Douglas beat Marske goalkeeper Jonathon McDonald from the spot.

Chester-le-Street are ending the season with a flourish. Their latest success was a 3-1 victory over Horden CW at Chester Moor Park.

The Cestrians made a dream start when Ben Johnson scored twice in the space of a minute.

The Colliers hit back with a header by Stephen Oakley on the hour before the home side made sure of the points when Johnson completed his hat-trick on 78 minutes.

Horden remain third from bottom and Brandon United are one place below them after they surrendered a two-goal lead to Northallerton Town.

Darren Mowbray threw Northallerton a lifeline by converting a 69th-minute penalty and 11 minutes from the end he again found the net to earn his side a point.

The points were also shared by Crook Town and top-six side Whickham. Darren Kokes struck for the home side in the 36th minute, but in the second half Paul Cavanagh converted a penalty for Whickham.

Hebburn Town are back on form and Tony Thirkell was their match-winner at Gillford Park.

Team Northumbria beat sixth-from-bottom Darlington RA thanks to a 24th-minute goal by Jack Palmer.

Team are now third-top, a point ahead of North Shields who have two games in hand.
