SUNDERLAND RCA extended their lead at the top of the table to six points when two early goals earned them victory in the Wearside derby with Washington at Meadow Park.
The home side made a dream start, scoring in the first minute.
Mark Davison split the Newtowners’ defence and Paul Taylor delivered a clinical finish into the bottom corner.
Davison was also involved in RCA’s second goal on 21 minutes.
He flicked the ball on to Michael Coghlan, who beat the goalkeeper with an exquisite chip.
Whitehaven, who started the day in second position, are down to third after their game at Stokesley was one of three postponed.
Marske United are now second – their highest rating at any stage of the season. They hit unpredictable Hebburn Town with a 4-0 defeat on South Tyneside, scoring twice in each half.
Derek Padley was an early scorer and before the break, Ben Thomson also found the net.
After the break, Thomson increased Hebburn’s deficit and Rob Jones then completed a comprehensive victory.
North Shields are fourth following a draw with sixth-placed Guisborough Town at Ralph Gardner Park.
Glen Butterworth headed the visitors into a 49th-minute lead.
However, it took the Robins only eight minutes to restore parity as Glen Taylor drove home from the edge of the penalty area.
The Shieldsmen have now gone 12 matches unbeaten and are the only side in the two divisions to have scored in every competitive fixture.
