Ryton 0 Ashington 3

AFTER losing for only the fourth time the previous week, Ashington bounced back to form at Ryton and remain third top, just four points behind Whitley Bay.

The Colliers enjoyed a half-time advantage thanks to Joe Race. The striker broke clear of the home defence and steered his shot wide of goalkeeper James French.

Visiting goalkeeper Karl Dryden made a number of good saves before Ashington increased their lead four minutes into the second period.

A cross from the left eluded everyone except Robbie Cockburn who pounced and scored from close range, leaving French helpless.

With 15 minutes remaining, Ryton went three goals down as Mark O’Dea was left unmarked and he easily headed home for Ashington’s third goal.

Ryton remain fifth from the bottom, just four points outside the last relegation place.

Shildon 0 Spennymoor 4

LEADERS Spennymoor Town go marching on, and a powerful second-half performance swept them to victory in the derby at Shildon.

The home side just about held their own during the opening 45 minutes and, after conceding just one goal, were hopeful of getting back into the match.

Shildon’s biggest crowd of the season saw Gareth Waite strike from 35 yards, leaving goalkeeper Keith Finch with no chance of saving.

Early in the second period Moors doubled their advantage.

A cross from the left was slid into the net by Craig Ruddy.

It was no surprise when Gavin Cogden headed in the third, and a minute later he wrapped up the points for Moors, who enjoy a three-point lead at the top after winning 16 of their 20 games.
