THE cooler temperatures have resulted in a slight downturn in local sport, but local anglers who braved the wind and the wet did find some success.
Rivers are now starting to attract more coarse rods to the banks.
The River Tyne had been producing the goods, the lower stretches have seen dace and gudgeon feeding well, whilst higher up the river chub are the intended target of many anglers.
News from the River Wear is a rare thing these days, so this week I was delighted to receive some. Local angler John Urwin had two afternoon session on the free stretch at Ferens Park. The first session saw him catching chub in the 12oz bracket, but the following day John was hitting some much better quality chub which were topped by a cracking fish of 6lb 7oz which John initially thought was a barbel, judging by the way it fought.
Anglers visiting the Angel have found good sport but persistence is necessary for good results as the fish react to the colder conditions.
Some good skimmers around the pound and a half mark are coming from Lookout Lake. Alec Witherspoon enjoyed a session catching 34 of these, along with rudd, ide and orfe.
