Coarse Angling: Boost for Whittle Dean anglers

THERE was some excellent news this week for local coarse anglers.

Following a request from the Tyneside Anglers Alliance it has been agreed that Whittle Dene Reservoirs will now be open to coarse anglers for 52 weeks a year.

Fishery Manager Don Coe confirmed this along with the news that a 20 peg section of the Derwent Reservoir will be open from now until the end of November.

This news is a terrific boost for coarse angling, especially as the close season is now in effect as anglers now have two terrific venues to choose from.

The new stock of carp in Aldin Grange have settled really well and are feeding with vigour, good nets are being taken, complimented with some decent ide and tench.

Maggot is the best bait fished over the fisheries own pellets, the match lake opens again today and some terrific sport is expected from it.

Wansbeck and Cramlington’s Winter League match at Horton Grange last Sunday didn’t suffer too much from the overnight frost, Ian Hunter took top weight of 4lb 6ozs, narrowly pipping Tony Dixon with 4lb 5ozs. Brendan Heslop took third with 2lb 13ozs from a swim which was greatly disturbed when he fell into it.

Dave Pearson won last Sunday’s open at the Angel with an all carp catch of 57lb 10ozs, Chris Gowling took second with 33lb and Geoff Lincoln completed the frame with 25lb 4oz.

This year’s North East Angling Show will take place at the Seaburn Centre on Whitburn Road, Seaburn on April 15, 16 and 17.

The show as usual will cover all types of angling, and plenty of displays and demonstrations are planned, admission will only be £3, and the show opens at 10am each day.
