Well, after the failure of the last survey done by CEFAS to find out what, where, and how much we catch, this has taken its place.
And if we want a fair crack of the whip it looks as if we are going to have to participate – that is unless you want decisions about our sport made on the 40 samples from each of the 10 IFCA’s (Inshore Fisheries & Conservation Authorities) on which the NFSAS is represented.
Unfortunately for us our sport is classed as an unregulated activity by most government departments, and the need for data was made clear regarding our obligation under the data collection framework (EU directive).
So Sea Angling 2012 is simply a project to collect information on shore and boat-based sea angling and the economic impact in England this year and next.
How will sea anglers benefit? Supposedly the information will help government and other bodies put into place policies that will put bigger fish – and more of them – into our seas.
Collection of the information will be in three parts. The first information will come via the MMO (Marine Management Organisation) from the ONS (office of National Statistics) to find out how many do go sea angling, how often and where.
The MMO will also be involved in the second part, gaining information from charter boats.
In the third part, CEFAS will again be left with the job of collecting information on shore-based and private boat anglers. Also there will be a detailed study of the economic value of sea angling.
