JOE COWPER landed the best result of his career with a top 20 place in the England Boys Open, the McGregor Trophy, at South Moor.
The reigning men’s and junior club champion at Darlington is a pal of Newcastle schoolboy Jack Hermeston.
Hermeston joined Graeme Storm in becoming only the second North East player to win the Boys Open in its 29-year history.
“It is significant Jack was seven under for the tournament,” said Cowper, who has just left Education Village in Haughton.
“I played in the Durham County men’s championship on the same course last season and one under won that.
“That’s how good a performance it was from Jack. It was a bit windy last year but I reckon that made only a couple of shots’ difference.”
Cowper, already playing and winning for the county men’s team, added: “The McGregor was the most official looking event I have taken part in”
“It was like a European Tour event the way it was organised for the players and I had a two-under in the last round.
“Even though I was not at my best, I scrambled round to finish in a good position.
