Sea Angling: Anglers make the most of weeds

THE anglers fishing the Amble Summer Open made the most of the fish that had moved into the weed beds over the last few weeks.

Burradon anglers Jimmy Dunn took five beautifully-coloured cod from Beadnal Harbour for a winning weight of 13lb 2.25oz, followed closely by Colin Bell of Whitley Bay AC who took three cod from Howick for 11lb 0.5oz.

Chris Potts of Gosforth came third with two codling and four nice coalfish for 10lb 3oz.

Paul Buddles, float fishing, took the heaviest cod of 5lb 10oz and one of the two dogfish landed.

Dunns bag also included the second heaviest fish a cod of 5lb 0.25oz, Bell taking the third heaviest at 4lb 7.25oz.

Flounders failed to put in much of an appearance, Norma Urwin using her local knowledge to win the ladies section with two for 1lb 2.25oz, including the second heaviest at 10.75oz. Tony Cook took the heaviest at 12.25oz, K Mitford the third heaviest at 10oz.

Although no junior weighed in, the rod and reel prize kindly given by Gary of Anglers United, Lynemouth, was awarded to Gordon Holland who landed and returned safely a very nice turbot of 32cms.

Unfortunately, the weather hit the attendance with 75 turning out with 25 weighing in 44 cod, four flounder, seven coalfish, one wrasse and two dogfish for 137lb 13.5oz.

In the Redcar Navy and Gents heaviest fish open, Paul Lobley fished at Cowbar to take the winning fish – a monster wrasse of 5lb. He was followed by Paul Short with a codling of 3lb 8oz taken at Goldsborough, with Danny Redling third with a wrasse of 3lb 7.2oz taken at Kettleness.

Only 19 out of 200 anglers caught fish in the Walney Open. Peterlee’s Jim Dobie winning his section with a bass of 3lb 8oz, Jimmy Smith of Workington was second to Jim with a bass of 3lb 3oz.
