Sea Angling: Phil Wright wins Open prize at Seahouses

AS expected the marks around Craster and Seahouses produced the bulk of the 40 fish for 120lb, mainly cod, taken by 29 anglers out of the 94 that fished the Bedlington Station Summer Open.

Phil Wright fished at Seahouses to win the event with four lovely-coloured cod for 15lb 8drams.

Craig Ogilvie took the heaviest fish of 5lb 8oz in his bag of two fish for 8lb 2oz 8drams which gave him second place, with Michael Dunbar third with three fish for 7lb 9oz.

Norma Urwin fished at one of her favourite matks, Warworth Beach, to take the heaviest flat fish, a nice plump flounder of 1lb 4oz.

I am always asking when someone's going to have a go for shark off the Tyne.

They are not far off, as one pleasure boat crew found out, as a very big porbeagle rubbed itself along the side off their small boat.

Naturally the cry “we need a bigger boat” came to mind.

The mind boggles, how ridiculous can it get the European commercial fishing fleet has thrown away 2.1 tonnes of cod worth a staggering 2.7 billion pounds.

I am always going on about how silly some anglers are when it comes to safety, but this takes the biscuit.

A trio of boat anglers were rescued after their boat sank. When asked where their lifejackets were, the answer was “they are in the house”. If these anglers had been in the water any longer it would have been a tradgedy, not an accident. If you have safety equipment, use it. If you haven’t, get some.
