Nov 13 2011 Sunday Sun
THE River Tyne proved once again just what its coarse angling capabilities are after a superb open match on the river last Sunday.
The last big match of the year, the Steve Roberts Memorial, not only attracted a big turnout, but provided some excellent weights with no less than 21 double-figure nets.
Chub and dace ruled the day with the top net of 64lb 6ozs taken by Jeff Herbert, who took 13 chub and around 30lb of dace from his peg at Riding Mill.
Second spot went to Eddie Bridon who netted 54lb 2ozs of dace. Completing the top three was Rob Perkins, whose trip from Nottingham was made worthwhile with 41lb 6ozs, again from the Riding Mill stretch.
Another match where big weights are expected is the Derwent Open, being fished today on the Derwent Reservoir.
The match is expected to be a sell-out and those anglers who have been practising over the last week have taken some very good nets of roach.
Whittle Dene continues to provide some very good sport, especially the from the Great Southern and the Lower Reservoir.
Dissington Pond is still fishing very well, ide and roach along with occasional tench are showing well in pleasure nets.
Today, apart from the Derwent Open, Wansbeck & Cramlington fish a Winter League match on Horton Grange while Sunderland FAC fish a similar event on Silksworth.
And Yarm AA fish the Bill Simpson Trophy on their stretch of the Tees.
On Tuesday night, the Tyneside Anglers Alliance meet at the Empire Club on Salters Road in Gosforth.
All member clubs are invited to be represented.
